In January 2009, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas made green building history when it became the first hospital in the world to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum designation from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Dell Children’s, which occupies close to 500,000 square feet on 32 acres that were once part of Austin’s old Mueller Airport, was able to recycle 47,000 tons of airport runway materials into the hospital site. Its world-class green design not only conserves water and electricity, but positively impacts the hospital’s clinical environment – and its ability to help children heal – by improving air quality, making natural sunlight more readily available and reducing a wide range of pollutants.
